Balancing Act

In the world we live in today, every waking moment is caught on somebody's phone or camera. Every exciting moment, moment of despair, moments of understanding, they are all documented on social media. This is something that I personally have struggled with understanding which side I am on. There are arguments that social media takes you away from living, and there are arguments that it is the way of living now. Some of you already know that I am someone who is black or white on every topic, at least until I understand it. We all know that balance is important in all aspects of life. In the last few months I have deleted several apps from my phone and decided that if I check them at all, it will only be a few times a day. I felt as though social media was keeping me from enjoying what is most important in life. I felt as though I was no longer living in the present moment but in the lives of everyone around me through their posts. I have started spending more time outside and more time rediscovering old hobbies. Through this however, I have realized that social media is not the enemy. No inanimate object can be the enemy because it can only do what you want it to. I was my own enemy, and I had to find a balance between using social media and also enjoying the real world for a while. There are moments that I reach for my phone and put it right back, because I know it is an important enough moment that I don't need a photo or status to remember it. Sometimes I just don't want to share my moment with the world. But just as often I do pull out my phone and take a few photos or I socialize with all of you. It's good to set your phone down and just live in the current moment, but you don't have to become an anti-social media extremist.
